Freemasonry in the United States

The United States has one of the world's most complex Masonic landscapes, with 51 mainstream grand lodges (one per state plus the District of Columbia) and 44 recognized Prince Hall grand lodges operating in parallel across the same jurisdictions. Every mainstream and Prince Hall grand lodge listed here is recognized by the United Grand Lodge of England.

The mainstream grand lodge system in the US developed from the late 18th century, with Massachusetts (1777) and Virginia (1778) among the oldest. Prince Hall Masonry traces its origin to African Lodge No. 459, chartered by the Grand Lodge of England in 1784; today's recognized PHA grand lodges represent a direct institutional lineage from that founding body. Mutual recognition between mainstream and PHA grand lodges — long withheld — has been established in the majority of US jurisdictions since the 1990s.
